It started with the spare computer in the basement. Now, Ubuntu has invaded my laptop. And the nice thing is that I’m not missing a single thing!
With all the patches and service packs and hacks and plugins and viruses and crashes and BHOs, my experience on my laptop has become quite unusable. It takes 5-10 minutes to boot and it takes 5 minutes to shut down.
Since they don’t support windows XP anymore, I thought about buying another laptop; we can’t afford one at the moment. So, I had to make do with what we got. Since I had to erase the computer anyway, I decided to erase the hard drive and go with Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10.
So much faster! So much smoother. It’s a much more elegant solution that doesn’t involve forking out 2Gs on a laptop. I have a feeling that I can squeeze a couple more years of life from this laptop now, provided that I don’t drop it or anything.
So bye bye Microsoft. I got a free solution and you pretty much lost out on getting your hands on our hard-earned dollars.
Perhaps when Windows 7 comes out, you’ll make it much more streamlined and set it up so it can run on cheaper computers.
