Carry on.

Public Speaking

Well, it’s official. I’ve been selected to represent CBUS at Creating Connections as a speaker at the event. I’ll be speaking to over 300 of the biggest, best and brightest of the Lower Mainland. Speaking to a group of 300 isn’t a problem. I speak to similarly sized groups at Church on a regular basis. It’s just that these people are people that may someday consider hiring me in the future. Heh… Imagine the headlines:

Herbert Cruz, Capilano Student Loses it While delivering Speech to big wigs
NORTH VANCOUVER BC (AP)- After only 30 seconds, a Business student lost his nerve and fell to the floor in a fetal position during a speech at a Lower Mainland networking event. He repeatedly muttered the words “They were all laughing at my tie!” before he was taken out on a stretcher. After several Blueberry milkshakes and Monty Mushroom hamburgers, the aspiring Human Resources Management professional eventually calmed down when he found out that they were all laughing with him, not at him.

Hopefully I’ll have something of value to say to them.

Strangely, I’m not too nervous. My wife’s giving birth shortly before exams is the thing that’s been weighing on my mind lately. I guess there are advantages to having children while at school: anything else (including speeches to big suits) is just child’s play.

With less than three days before the event, I haven’t put pen to paper yet. Do I do the inspiring speech? The dry informative speech? The valedictory speech? The “Dream the Impossible Dream” speech? No ideas yet.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

As suggested by someone in the Simpsons, “Just think of everybody in their underwear and you’ll do fine”… Who suggested it to Homer? Was it Lenny or Moe?
